Divorce can have a silver lining, too

| Nov 8, 2018 | Divorce |

In the United States, including in Pennsylvania, people generally dream of getting married and living in marital bliss long term. This is why divorce can be so painful: it is the opposite of the American dream. Unfortunately, between 40 and 50 percent of Americans who are married end up getting divorced. However, divorce can certainly come with positives as well.

For instance, research shows that three-quarters of couples experience major conflict with in-laws. Specifically, the relationship between the daughter-in-law and mother-in-law tends to be the most difficult to handle. Those who are going through divorce, however, can finally say goodbye to these negative relationships. After all, when people divorce their spouses, they essentially divorce their spouses’ family members, too.

Also, when two individuals are in an unhappy marriage, they have a tendency not to want to stay home. However, this can easily change after divorce. They can finally split up and start building their own homes — homes they actually feel comfortable in and enjoy being in, as they can live according to their own terms going forward.

Of course, despite the silver lining that surrounds the cloud of divorce, going through the divorce process itself can no doubt be trying both emotionally and financially. However, if two divorcing spouses can find see eye to eye on how to handle matters such as asset distribution and alimony, they may be able to soften the blow by reaching a divorce agreement outside of court, rather than having a judge decide for them how their issues will be settled. An attorney in Pennsylvania can provide the direction a client needs to navigate the process in the most personally favorable way possible.
