Prenuptial agreement may offer protection during divorce

When two people get married, they generally believe that their marriage will work out. Unfortunately, life does not always go as planned. In the event that divorce is unavoidable down the road, putting together a prenuptial agreement may be a wise move for couples who have yet to walk down the aisle in PA.

Even though prenuptial agreements may not necessarily seem romantic, creating one is one of the most critical tasks to complete following an engagement. After all, about a third of marriages fail. With a prenuptial agreement, people can ensure that their assets are protected before they get married.

Couples would be wise to create prenuptial agreements a minimum of six months prior to the wedding, if possible. However, those who are much closer to the wedding date can still create these agreements before it is too late. After the wedding occurs, creating a prenuptial agreement is no longer an option, although a couple can still take advantage of the opportunity to create a similar postnuptial agreement. What is most important is that the couple have a plan in place for dealing with their assets if they end up going through a divorce down the road.

Those who lack prenuptial or postnuptial agreements at the time of their divorce proceedings can still try to complete informal negotiations with the other party. This will increase their chances of having the most amicable divorce proceedings possible without further court intrusion. A qualified attorney can provide the help needed to draft prenuptial and postnuptial agreements as well as assist in navigating any divorce negotiations in PA.
