Divorce and what it can and can't do for you

Nobody gets married with the idea that they will one day go through the divorce process. Even so, this happens to thousands of couples every year.

The question of whether to divorce or stay together is never a simple one to answer. On one side of things, you may have a very good reason for wanting to split. Conversely, there may be other reasons to stay together, such as to provide your children with a two-parent home.

As a resident of Pennsylvania, it's important to note that you live in a no-fault state. In short, this means that couples typically state irreconcilable differences as the reason for the divorce.

While this is an important detail, it doesn't do much with respect to deciding whether or not to move forward with the process. To better address this question, you should learn more about what divorce can actually do.

First things first, a divorce won't resolve all your family issues. For example, this isn't something that will help you get on the same page with regard to your finances.

However, this is a legal process that can help you determine how your children are cared for, what happens to marital property, and who may receive and/or pay alimony and child support.

Consider the process

Many couples think about divorce at some point during their marriage. While some people bring this to light, others keep it to themselves in the hope that things will eventually get better.

Before making the decision to divorce, do these things:

  • Talk to your spouse about your feelings.
  • Learn more about the divorce process, including what it entails and how it will impact your life.
  • Think about what this will mean to your future, as well as the impact on your children (if you have any).

No two people are in the exact same position, but every couple has the opportunity to learn more about the process and it's potential impact.

Since divorce is such a big decision, it's not something to take lightly. You want to know what this can and can't do for you, and then make a decision based on your findings.

If you decide to move forward, be sure to understand the steps you need to take as well as your legal rights.
